The Daring Female Guide to Ecstatic Living – Natasha Kogan

I picked up this book at a book sale in one of those moments where I asked myself when was the last time I did something daring? (It was actually in 2001 when I picked up ice skating, a dare for someone prone to tripping and twisting ankle.)

As with most inspirational books, this one does inspire with dares of ”doing something not your age”, ”do now, not later” etc. In fact, I gave this book to an air stewardness as I finished reading on the plane; of course, I felt it is a good enough book to pass on to another female.

Not life changing impact for me, but you can check out the Daring Female site for community support.

Health Magazine for Females – Good Health

good-health.JPGAnother female health magazine from australia. This one has fairly few advertisements but this issue, at least, offers less interesting or new stuff to me. I didn’t take away much useful tips except for a few cut-outs I made of those yoga photos.

Health Magazine for Females – Prevention

This magazine contains interesting health articles and some good exercise and diet tips. For instance, you ought to let crushed garlic stand for 10-15 minutes before frying so that its cancer-fighting enzyme will not be lost (as much). Also ICE stands for In Case of Emergency and ought to input ICE number in mobilephone call list.

Only drawback is that there is an advertisement on almost every alternate page. Some of the advertisements are pretty informative while others like the Neutrogena one below looks great.

p.s. I like the design and though the ad tagline is ‘very dry skin has a new way of fighting back’, the first message I get is punching the fats away!

Reading – Thomas Chalmers

Came across this quote of Thomas Chalmers on Together for the Gospel.

“Perhaps the greatest gift any father can bestow upon his children, apart from the covenant blessings of parish life and a comprehension of the doctrines of grace, is a passion for reading. It is cheap, it consoles, it distracts, it excites, it gives a knowledge of the world, and it offers experience of a wide kind. Indeed, it is nothing less than a moral illumination.”

Richard Bode – First you have to row a little boat

A wonderful book.

Written as a message from Richard Bode to his sons, telling them (and the readers) the lessons which he learnt from sailing. Very beautiful and honest, engaging even for readers who do not sail. It explores themes such as seeking and following one’s dreams, savoring the dailies of life, the busyness of our lifes and the futility of a life without a dream..

There are so many pages that bring across simple yet strong messages that I read and re-read to soak it all in and even noted them down. You have to read this book and I’m going to read more of his books.

Every Excuse in the Book – Craig Boldman & Pete Matthews

Neat book with funny drawings! Though some of the excuses are not universal, there’s one that really struck me — “I’m only one person.” I’ve heard this countless times that I’m starting to think it is fast becoming a legitimate reason to use!

And Craig writes the Jughead comic book and Archie. His site is craigboldman.com; I’d love to check it out but looks like it’s down for the moment. Well, let me know if you find other books by Craig.
