The message in this book is a reminder to us that the church is meant to be a place of grace, starting with the example of Jesus dying for us when there is no way that we have or can earn it.

This book started out great, with stories of grace and how ungrace, hurt, bearing grudges can destory our lifes and others. Later as it ventured into how grace/ungrace affects the political/ national issues, it becomes quite tiring to read. Overall, a good overview and review of the issue of grace but I’d say with less impact than Yancey’s other book ”Disappointment with God”.

From describing his own experience to providing solid biblical foundation for his views, I’m convinced as to how not to waste my life, there is only one way. Putting God as the central. A lot of verses from Paul suddenly becomes crystal clear to me.. this is a book that you have to read, and it’s so good I’m putting it up on my Cartoon Bread Store!

1. Opus Dei: Catholic lay organisation, nothing to do with documents of the Priory of Sion which
2. Admitted by Pierre Plantard in 1993 that these documents were fabricated
3. Bible: 66 books written by 40+ authors. Old Testament was recognised before Jesus’ time and the New Testament gospels were written within first century unlike the Gnostic Gospels that were written in second &/ third century.
4. Council of Nicea was convened by Emperor Constantine but he did not lead the Council. It was convened as there was this guy, Arius, who was claiming that Jesus was not an eternal God. The Council did not debate about whether Jesus is divine cos there’s no question about that.
5. Emperor Constantine was baptised before his death only because there was this belief that a baptism before death would cleanse all the sins committed in one’s lifetime. (wrong belief, and btw, Constantine was converted in AD312 not at his death).
6. No hint of Jesus being married in the gospels or in the early historical records.

That’s all folks!

All these are done through light-hearted conversations between three friends who are interested in the book and wants to find out more! Because it is so reader-friendly and thin, I’m going to buy a few copies to give to my intellectual pre-believing friends.

I think that my intellectual friends will be confronted to be intelligent.. that is, there are sufficient facts recorded such that they can no longer say that Jesus is just a wise guy. Please get this book as a present for the friends you love.

The biblestories are told as stories through a girl, Eva to her brother. Eva’s storytelling to her brother serve as a lead-in for every chapter.

While this is a refreshing approach, it may pose some difficulty for parents to tell the biblestory to their children and start it off with a girl trying to tell that same story to her brother! Also, it may give young children the impression that it’s stories passed from one generation to the next, rather than being the true bible.

The illustration is however lively and pretty.
