My first suggestion is to borrow the book instead of buying it cos there’s a high chance that someone you know will have the book and willing to lend you.
Firstly, I read the book as it is the required reading for homecell discussion in May when the church starts the small seeker groups (for friendly chats with pre-believers on the book). This book, despite its controversy, opens a great opportunity to engage non-christians in a christ-centred discussion.
Secondly, I have to admit that what everyone says is true- the book is easy to read, hard to put down with its gripping conspiracy.
Lastly, & unfortunately, characters in the book who are supposed to be knowledgeable (and credible if you picture Tom Hanks and Audrey Tatou) claim that Jesus is not divine, the bible is a political tool of Emperor Constantine and Mary Magdelene was Jesus’ wife. This is disturbing not because I’m shaken by it but because I can understand how one may be affected; the building up of the characters make the reader trust them and only after many chapters, these fictional claims of Jesus and the bible were made.
Would I recommend the book? Yes, but just don’t pay for it.
