From a church camp that I attended, I learnt that the Cantonese service was in need of helpers. I did not express my desire to start serving in church then because I was wary of what I would be getting myself into – long-term commitment, too much personal contact for comfort etc.
There are, however, pros that make me take that leap for a baby: (1) improve communication with my parents on the bible; I came back to Singapore partly to tell my parents about Jesus and bring them to church. But, I have not been successful in explaining the bible to them because I do not know how to do so in Cantonese. (2) Enjoy the Cantonese service and like to be part of it and (3) Get off that Baby Bottle!
I went up to the pastor and demanded that my name be noted so that I can be contacted when help is needed. Think he was shocked that I am so serious!
In any case, I was introduced to a few people in charge of various ministries and I decided to explore the story telling session. This is basically a session to tell the bible in an animated and simple manner so that many new elderly believers may understand the meaning in each book. This is slightly out of my comfort zone but nevertheless, I decided that this would improve my Cantonese and teach me to communicate with the elderly.
I was thinking that surely I would be given some training before I start being the storyteller…
